Well, there are so many reasons as to why i do what i do, but at the top of that list; learning and discovering new insights about various topics in the world of organic agriculture has always been at the top of my desires!

For its through learning that one can be able to capture some form of knowledge in order for me to share, discuss and bring into light new knowledge hub that exists. It’s for this reason that this particular adventure turned out to be absolutely fantastic and admirable!

The Organic Guy With Mr. Moses Gichoya Enjoying an exotic fruit!

In this adventure, i found myself in a place called Magena, in Kiambu County. A little less than a one hour drive from the central business district of Nairobi, Kenya. On arrival, the one thing that you couldn’t ignore of the place is its epic view over the Rift Valley. This lets you adore and appreciate how beautiful and magnificent our country Kenya can be

Immediately you arrive at this place, you can immediately tell your lungs appreciate you for letting it breath in some fresh air at least once in a while, especially if you are coming from a city setting.

On the other hand, the freshness of the air of this particular place is just awesome. It’s one of those things that one doesn’t need telling. Immediately you arrive at this place, you can immediately tell your lungs appreciate you for letting it breath in some fresh air at least once in a while, especially if you are coming from a city setting. This makes you also appreciate the lovely work that our trees do for us. I feel like when people say they wanna have a breath of fresh air, this is where they should be coming, for them to experience it firsthand.

But then having a breath of fresh air wasn’t really my agenda, but i couldn’t ignore it so i had to. On this adventure, i had come to visit Mr. Moses Gichoya who is a herbal medicine doctor and has been doing this for quite a while now. So i was pretty much curious to know how did he find himself as a herbal medicine doctor and what really motivates him to continue to do what he does!

He allowed various plants to continue to grow, NOT even trying to trim them down, but rather to let them thrive! Why? All this plants have medicinal value!

On arrival at his home, you could tell how different his home is from the typical home. Where as in a typical home you could find a well cut compound with just a few plants here and there, his was different! He allowed various plants to continue to grow, NOT even trying to trim them down, but rather to let them thrive! Why? All this plants have medicinal value!

So we then decided to have a walk to his garden so that he could give us an overview of the kind of plants that he has at his disposal for medicinal purposes. To our surprise, Maize was the first stop we had for our medicinal schooling! Who knew that maize would be this medicinal? Who knew that black jack and wondering Jew would be the solution to numerous amount of diseases? Something that some of our farmers have been convinced to be weeds hence spraying some huge doses of toxic herbicides which take years to decompose.

Have you ever heard of stinging nettle? Well, if you haven’t heard of it, it actually does what its name suggests. If its surface comes across your skin, then you will know exactly what I mean. But could you have figured it out that it has some medicinal value? Definatly NOT if you grew up someone like me being told that it was your enemy. So every time I came across it, my first reaction was to slash it out.

Mr. gichoya also had his own drying place where after harvesting his herbs, he would take them there for drying and then grind them, turn them into powder form after which he then prescribes it to the various patients according to the kind of complain one might have.

Having had a glimpse of his various kinds of herbs, it was now a time for a sit down with him to try and get his personal story and how he got himself into the trade of dealing with herbs. He apparently in his early years, studied to a veterinary doctor after which he worked in the government for thirty years where he then decided to retire and then started to work in private farms to help them manage their livestock through which he met a herbalist who then introduced him to herbal medicine after which he says he has never looked back!

Asking about what he enjoys most about his work, he says that for him seeing his patients get well gives him joy and the desire to continue to learn more so that he could help them even more. Asking him about what he thinks our generation is having a shorter lifespan, he simply said, our lifestyle. Nowadays we don’t want to work, want to eat a lot and more so eat unhealthy foods!

About some of the challenges that he faces, he says that most of the people he talks to don’t really trust him about his herbal prowess. There is still disbelieve from his fellow people because they saw him grow up as a veterinary doctor, so telling them otherwise sort of confuses them. He also thinks that the government should make an effort of helping them out and actually recognizing their indigenous knowledge as also something that can help people to be healthy!
