Who Is the Organic Guy?
I often get asked, “How did you become The Organic Guy?” Was it a single moment, a specific event, or a person who coined the name? The truth is, my journey into the organic movement wasn’t planned — it was shaped by my upbringing, challenges, and an unshakable passion for sustainable agriculture.
Rooted in Organic Farming
My name is Omoke Ogaro Brian, but most people on the internet know me as The Organic Guy. I was born and raised in Kisii County, Kenya, where I had the privilege of growing up with my grandparents who were one of the most successful farmers in our village and introduced me to the rhythm of farm life early on. I spent my childhood in the fields, helping with livestock, preparing manure, and watching crops flourish without synthetic chemicals — though back then, I didn’t realize this was called organic farming.
It wasn’t until I joined Egerton University in 2013 to study agriculture that I had my “aha” moment. I discovered that the very farming methods my grandmother practiced — crop rotation, natural fertilizers, mixed farming — were not just traditional; they were organic principles at work. It was a realization that would shape the rest of my life.
When Life Took a Detour
But my journey was far from smooth. Two years into my studies, I was discontinued from university. My world crumbled. The dreams I had were suddenly out of reach, and I found myself in a dark place, battling hopelessness and questioning my purpose.
At my lowest moment, I turned to the only thing I truly understood — organic farming. It gave me meaning when nothing else did. In 2016, I started a blog called Think Organic to share my knowledge and experiences. Writing about organic farming wasn’t just an outlet; it became my purpose.
Determined to continue my education, I enrolled at Kenya Methodist University, where my passion for organic farming earned me the nickname The Organic Guy. In 2018, I graduated with First-Class Honors in Agriculture — a moment that proved resilience can turn adversity into opportunity.
Building an Organic Movement
Shortly after graduation, my blog Think Organic gained recognition and was nominated for Blaze Be Your Own Boss TV Show by Safaricom. This experience fueled my entrepreneurial spirit, leading to the birth of:
- Think Organic — An e-commerce platform making organic and natural products easily accessible.
- Organic Adventures — A movement reconnecting people with nature through farm tours and eco-friendly travel experiences.
I have also worked with major organizations within the organic movement, including:
✅ Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) — Internship
✅ Organic Consumers Alliance (OCA) — Head of programs.
✅ Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN) — Member
Through these experiences, I have earned certifications from IFOAM — Organics International, FiBL, GIZ, Centonomy, and StartHub Wageningen, among others.
From Africa to the Global Stage
In 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was blessed to get a scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Organic Agriculture at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, the world’s leading institution in agriculture. My thesis focused on comparing the technical efficiency of organic and conventional dairy farms in the Netherlands, bridging the gap between research and real-world agricultural practices.
Today, I continue to amplify the organic movement through:
🎙 The Organic Guy Podcast — The leading agricultural podcast in East and Central Africa, sparking conversations on sustainable food systems.
📩 The Organic Guy Newsletter — Sharing insights on organic farming and sustainability.
📚 Organic Consultancy — A guide in helping farmers establish and cultivate organic and profitable enterprises.
My Mission
I believe in living an organic lifestyle — not just in farming, but in the way we connect with the earth, our food, and each other. My mission is to help farmers create wealth through organic farming while promoting a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
The organic movement is not just a career for me; it’s a calling. Every day, I wake up knowing that through knowledge, passion, and action, we can transform the way the world farms and eats — one organic step at a time. 🌱
